Musée des châteaux de Versailles et de Trianon
In 1661, despite the many royal properties at his disposal, Louis XIV chose Versailles as the site for a château worthy of his greatness. At the time, as Saint Simon wittily remarked, there nothing there but "a little card castle that Louis XIII had built, so he no longer had to sleep in the straw."
Taking over the team that had built Vaux-le-Vicomte, the king launched the biggest construction project of the century, which at times employed as many as 36,000 workers. In 1682, the Sun King and his court officially moved into Versailles and the château remained a royal residence until the French Revolution in 1789.
