Successively a medieval castle, a royal palace and, since 1793, a museum, the Louvre was one of Europe’s very first museums and is now one of the world’s richest. Its collections are divided into eight major departments Near Eastern Antiquities; Egyptian Antiquities; Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities; Painting; Sculpture; Decorative Arts; Graphic Arts; Islamic Arts and two sections: African, Oceanic and American Arts; and the History of the Louvre.
