Musée et domaine nationaux du château de Fontainebleau

Château de Fontainebleau

Justifying the title of "house of centuries, a truly royal dwelling" that Napoleon bestowed upon it, the Château de Fontainebleau guards the memory of over 700 years of French royalty, from the coronation of Louis VII in 1137 until the fall of the Second Empire in 1870.

Two of the kings who lived there deserve special honour: Francis I, who introduced Renaissance art to France by calling on Italian artists, especially Rosso and Primaticcio, to decorate the newly rebuilt château; and then Henry IV, who also extended the building and established France’s artistic reputation by encouraging the development of the Second School of Fontainebleau.
