This stole is inspired by the painting of Madame de Récamier by François Pascal Simon, baron Gérard (1770-1837).
The most famous portrait of Juliette Récamier shows her clothed in a Greek-style dress, nonchalantly seated on an Etruscan chair in an ancient bath. Painted around 1802 by Gérard, who was known as "the painter of kings and the king of painters", it reflects contemporary society's interest in antiquity.
The painting was given by Mme Récamier to Prince August of Prussia, whom she had almost married, and it was kept to Berlin. In 1845, after the death of the prince, the portrait was returned to her according to the deceased's wishes.
