This is the french edition of the catalogue relationg to the exhibition Jean-Baptiste Isabey portraitist of Europe.
This exhibition, the first real retrospective of Isabey’s work, has collected some 160 works at Malmaison.
They illustrate his many-facetted career as a miniature portraitist, master of ceremonies, set designer and landscape gardener. They also show an artist capable of riding on the crest of a tumultuous century, from the reign of Louis XVI to that of Napoleon III.
Many lenders have contributed to the exhibition, especially the Louvre and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, but also many French and foreign museums and several private collections, bringing together a set of works that are too fragile to be on permanent display.
