The engraved inscription on the circular base "Caisari Augusto Atespatus Crixi Filius V(otum) S(oluit) L(ibens) M(erito)" indicates that this portrait was dedicated to Livia by Atespatus, son of Crixus.
It may be thought that this bust belonged to the Atespatus Larary, which explains its independence from official portraits, but there is no doubt that this portrait represents an aged Livia.

Discovered in Neuilly-le-Réal, near Moulins (Allier), May 7, 1816, and acquired by the Louvre Museum in 1868.
