It is from the collection of cut-out gouaches - "the cut-out sky", as Aragon said -, from the Matisse Museum in Nice, that the authors' thinking develops. This remarkable collection bears witness to the work accomplished by Matisse, at the end of his life, in the face of the challenge that was the project for the Rosary Chapel in Vence (1947-1951). The technique of paper cut-outs, an ideal synthesis between drawing, sculpture and painting, became the very expression of his research on line and colour.
This highly illustrated book, catalogue of the Matisse Museum exhibition, invites us to admire this new plastic exploration of the great artist who declared: "By creating these coloured cut-out papers, it seems to me that I am happily going to meet what is to come".
