Through an exceptional photographic collection, this book traces the career of Antonio Beato, photographer in Egypt from 1859 to 1905.
Given the little known about him, establishing a biography of the character was a challenge because, although we know many of his photographs, the man remains rather enigmatic. By investigating a wide range of archives, we managed to glean some little-known details about his personality and professional activity.
That leaves his photographs, which are the main focus of this study. Several thousand prints or reproductions exist. Although the first tourists appreciated his work and had albums and postcards made, it was mainly archaeologists who called on his services. Beato's work is therefore a first-rate testimony to nascent Egyptology, at a time when the great temples of the Nile Valley were being cleared and the country was being discovered.
