Prehistory. The other side of time
No, "the other side of time" is not a definition. Prehistory is not defined. It is even this indeterminacy that modern societies have secretly desired, by inventing the idea of prehistory and inhabiting it, for two centuries. With it, we plunge so deeply into time that the markers disappear and everything suddenly reverses, like the plates of a balance: time weighs less than time immemorial. But what is the immemorial?
This book recounts the stages in the construction of this idea of prehistory, its contents, its contradictions, its indissoluble link with modernity, the fundamental role played by art. The irreducible grey areas of scientific discourse leave the field open to creation. Among many others, Friedrich, Cézanne, Giacometti, Smithson, as well as Rousseau, Darwin, Marx or Proust, are for us the witnesses.
