The artist

Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890)

Unrecognized artist and misunderstood during his lifetime, Van Gogh is one of the great painters of the nineteenth century. Son of a Protestant pastor, he hesitated a time between the artistic and religious vocation, before finally devoting himself to painting. Van Gogh frequented the world of impressionist painters and refined his research on color as his palette became lighter and more varied. To complete his work, he moved to Arles, in February 1888. Dazzled by the light of the South, Van Gogh then made color the very object of his work, seeking the greatest possible intensity of both tones and chromatic ratios. On July 27, 1890, the painter put an end to his life then aged 37 years. In eight years, he produced nearly 900 paintings and a thousand drawings.
