In the '50s and '60s, Calder, Vasarely and Tinguely spearheaded the success of optic-kinetic art, a trend whose origins can be traced back to the beginning of the 20th century.
By putting the image into motion and making the spectator's own mobility one of the parameters of the work, they replaced composition and polychromy with space, animation and real time. A revolution in the art world!
This film pays homage to this art movement through the previously unheard testimony of living artists - pioneers like Agam, Le Parc and Morellet, and their heirs, such as Decrauzat and Janssens - but also by means of sumptuous archive material related to the deceased founders.
Beyond their differences in style and materials used, the film reminds us what linked these "kinetic" artists - namely, the unprecedented importance they accorded to the active spectator - and emphasises the great vitality of an artistic means of expression that is in constant evolution.
