From the 1840s, and more broadly from the 1850s, photography was introduced in Asia, in the wake of Western conquests. It is initially carried out by European operators who will then transmit its technique and train local operators.
It was not until the 1970s, and with some hindsight, that historians became interested in it and restored it to its place in the world history of photography.
This book, the first in French, presents an exceptional panorama of photography in Asia in the 19th century, and its distribution from west to east, from Afghanistan, India, Ceylon and Burma, through Siam, Cambodia, Cochin China, Annam, Tonkin, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, to China, Japan and Korea.
