The Architectures series explores the most ambitious architectural achievements of the 19th and 20th centuries. This documentary, which can be viewed in English, French and German, features exceptional archival images, scale models and interviews with the greatest architects of our time.

Architectures 4 presents six twenty-six minute films focussing on important works by major architects:

  • The Royal Salt Works of Arc-et-Senans by Claude Nicolas Ledoux: At the end of the 18th century, Claude Nicolas Ledoux built a monumental factory for the King of France in the region of Franche Comté. Both aesthetic revolution and innovative industrial site, it is the centre of an ideal city that will never come to be.

  • The Glass House by Pierre Chareau: Between 1928 and 1932, the designer Pierre Chareau built an avant-garde steel and glass house in Paris. A machine built to live in, it is an unclassifiable work that is playful and poetic, full of surprises, discoveries and rhythm.

  • The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao by Franck O'Gehry: In 1997, the Guggenheim Foundation inaugurated a new museum built by Franck O'Gehry. Already well-known for his strange, deconstructed architectural forms, O'Gehry designed a building in Bilbao to match his ambitions: a monumental sculpture with a chaotic and abstract appearance.

  • Jean Prouve's House: Jean Prouvé dreamt of creating houses that were as beautiful and rational as airplanes or automobiles. In 1953, while going through the worst crisis of his life, he built his own house with a sense of urgency. Made in a slapdash manner from this and that, it nonetheless embodies his most innovative ideas.

  • The Abbey Church of Sainte Foy at Conques: In 1050, in the wild landscape of the Aveyron area, in the town of Conques, one of the first great pilgrimage churches in the western world was built. An example of Romanesque architecture at its very birth, the audacious, rational and luminous abbey church turns archetypes on their head.

  • The Multimedia Library of Sendaï by Toyo Ito: In a glass aquarium measuring 50m by 50m, seaweed drifts and waves with the currents of water. Toyo Ito did not create a single space in which the columns, the surface of the glass and the bottom of the aquarium converge to give a majestic effect. On the contrary, these three elements appear independent of each other, accentuating the immateriality and lightness of the building.
