Psyche Revived by Cupid's kiss - Antonio Canova
Reproduction with hand patina. Mold made from an impression of the original work exhibited in the Louvre.
The legend of Cupid and Psyche greatly inspired the neoclassical sculptors of the late 18th century. Canova was no exception to the rule, depicting numerous versions. In the one in the Louvre, he chose to illustrate the moment when Cupid, the god of love, is about to embrace Psyche to deliver her from her deep sleep. Time seems to be suspended before this imminent kiss, freezing in marble all the tenderness of the loving couple.
