Abdelkader, The Emir of the Resistance - Exhibition catalogue
The collections of the Roubaix Museum preserve a very beautiful portrait of Aïcha, a woman of Abd-El-Kader (1866), by Constant Brochart (1816-1899). This very fragile and rarely shown pastel is a perfect example of the aesthetic choices of 19th century orientalist art, but its supposed model above all evokes the great figure of Algerian resistance to the French conquest, the Emir Abdelkader (1808- 1883).
The exhibition, organised around portraits of the Emir lent by the Palace of Versailles, will present the itinerary and heritage of the Emir. Considered since 1962 as the founder of the modern Algerian state, he remains a very lively figure in contemporary Algeria and his presence in the Algerian Spring project of La Piscine is a strong symbolic element of this new season.
