Back Side - Fashion from behind - Catalogue d'exposition
While fashion likes to show itself from the front, the exhibition - and the catalogue - Fashion from behind turn the spotlight on the back. To explore this new theme of the back in fashion, the Bourdelle Museum presents an exceptional collection of clothing and accessories from the 18th century to the present day, drawn from the collections of the Palais Galliera and the archives of major fashion houses.
Bringing together pieces by Chanel, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Schiaparelli, Alaïa, Yamamoto, Martin Margiela and Olivier Theyskens, Fashion from behind questions how we perceive our backs and those of others. Indeed, man has equivocal relations with his back: the flattest part of our body, he escapes our sight, making him more vulnerable; and yet, fashion never ceases to adorn, charge or strip him.
The book is based on photographs of great fashion photographers (Sieff, Avedon, etc.) who sublimate the sensuality and/or technical prowess of the pieces presented as well as on reflections of great fashion designers, such as Gabrielle Chanel's illuminating formula: "The whole articulation of the body is in the back: all the gestures start from the back. »
