Alessandro Filipepi (c. 1445 - 1510), better known as Botticelli, is undoubtedly one of the most famous artists of the Italian Renaissance, although a certain amount of mystery still surrounds his life and the activity of his workshop.
As the head of an important bottega, Botticelli was the creator of enchanting mythological scenes and an exceptional portraitist, recipient of prestigious commissions. His destiny is intimately linked to that of his native city, which experienced unprecedented influence followed by profound changes at the end of the 15th century.
Presenting some forty works by this refined painter, accompanied by a number of paintings by his contemporaries, the exhibition "Botticelli, Artist & Designer" celebrates the creative genius of one of the emblematic figures of 15th century Italian painting.
This catalogue, which accompanies and extends the exhibition, evokes Botticelli's personal stylistic development, resituating him in the culture of his time, in order to highlight the activity of his workshop as well as the influence he exerted on Florentine artists of the Quattrocento.
Exhibition at the Musée Jacquemart-André, Paris from 10 September 2021 to 24 January 2022
