This book reflects the retrospective presented at the Galerie nationale du Grand Palais. All the periods of his creation are shown, from Fauvism to the ultimate work, which culminates in the series of the large workshops and the birds.
His close artistic relationship with Picasso is also presented.
The authors analyse the major creations, based on a principle of thematic variation - landscapes, still lifes, nudes and workshops - which amplify and summarise his research.
Other perspectives are addressed: his collaboration with Henri Laurens in the 1920s, his complicity with poets : Pierre Reverdy, Francis Ponge, René Char ... as well as with intellectual figures of his time such as Carl Einstein or Jean Paulhan.
Finally, his work has always been closely linked to music, particularly that of Erik Satie.
