La tenture de l'Histoire d'Alexandre le Grand
This catalogue was published for the exhibition Alexandre et Louis XIV: tissages de gloire presented at la galerie des Gobelins, in Paris in 2008-2009.
From 1667 to 1689, the Gobelins manufacturer, whose director was the King's first painter Charles Le Brun, produced no less than eight copies of the hanging representing the story of Alexander the Great. The impressive models of this work were painted by the artist.
Because of its extraordinary size, the striking effect of the panoramic compositions, the wealth of the materials (wool, silk, silver and gold) and the infinite perfection of the production, the Story of Alexander the Great received universal admiration.
