Meiji. Splendeurs du Japon impérial - Exhibition catalogue
Under the reign of Mutsuhito, Emperor Meiji, Japan underwent an unprecedented overhaul of its political, economic and social systems, resulting in the country's extremely rapid modernization: the Meiji restoration.
The purpose of this book is to highlight the different aspects of Japan's modernization and the internationalization of its cultural production through different artistic techniques. Silverware, partitioned pieces, photographs, textiles, paintings, bronzes, ceramics... illustrate the changes taking place in society as a whole and in art in particular.
Throughout the richly illustrated pages, we discover great names in art, such as Kawanabe Kyôsai or Shibata Zeshin. The links between Japanese and European artists and creators are also evoked by the links between Japanese and contemporary Western works.
We discover a little-known chapter in the history of the arts that shows how Japan also invented "Japaneseism".
This book is published on the occasion of the exhibition, presented at the Musée Guimet, Paris, from 17 October 2018 to 14 January 2019.
