Raphael is undoubtedly one of the best known artists in the history of Western art. His fame is certainly due to his genius, but also to the extent of the diffusion of his "manner", made possible during his lifetime both by the number of students he trained and by the circulation of prints.
Raphael's name is also attached to the development of the "chiaroscuro" technique, a colour engraving process, in monochrome, obtained by printing as many matrices as the desired colours. Ugo da Carpi's chiaroscuri, which bear Raphael's invention, are among the first colour engravings made in Italy.
