Book published on the occasion of the exhibition presented at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Caen, from 25 May to 15 September 2019
The book explores the world of contemporary printmaking, with a particular focus on the most spectacular and heterodox productions. Five hundred years after Albrecht Dürer, whose monumental Arc de Triomphe by Maximilien I assembled no less than 36 printed sheets, artists are more than ever in favour of the large format, as the print has long since ceased to be an instrument for the dissemination of images, but rather a field of experimentation and a means of creating works.
Going beyond the rules of common publishing leads to taking over all the techniques without a priori, from the most traditional (engraving on metal and wood, lithography, silkscreen printing...) to the most innovative (photogravure, digital printing, wall paper...), to play with the limits of printmaking (gigantism, support other than paper, seriality, collage...), to question finally the modes of representation as the systems for making images.
Many major actors in the art world over the past fifty years have taken up this challenge, including Pierre Alechinsky, Georg Baselitz, Christiane Baumgartner, Pierre Buraglio, Gunter Damisch, Jim Dine, Franz Gertsch, David Hockney, Anselm Kiefer, Frédérique Loutz, Julie Mehretu, Richard Serra, Jose Maria Sicilia, Antoni Tapiès... and many others.
