Born in Lectoure (Gers) on the 10th April 1769, a volunteer in the 2nd battalion of the Gers, brigade commander in 1793, brigadier general in 1796, divisional general in 1799, marshal of the Empire in 1804, Lannes, "the Roland of the army", as he was nicknamed, was one of the Empire's most prestigious war chiefs and also one of its most tragic military figures.
