Born on 10 January 1769 in Sarrelouis, a French outpost in German Lorraine. He was of modest origin, his father being a cooper, but he had been a soldier and had fought in the Seven Years' War. Michel's initial training was insufficient. Attracted by the army, the young man enlisted at the age of nineteen in the 5th Hussars in Metz.
