A painter of altarpieces offering his services to great Catholic prelates, Cranach, a friend of Luther, conceived, at the time of the Reformation, a whole range of Protestant imagery designed to counteract excesses in devotion.
The variety of themes embraced by Cranach, portraits, biblical or mythological scenes, allegories with a moral purpose, testifies to a prodigious iconographic inventiveness.
