Is there any such thing as art brut? - French
The question of what is art brut or not arises. Children's art? Folk art? Naive art? Outstanding art or unique art? The name itself is questioned: why call it "raw" when artists like those of Cobra are also committed to making artistic expressions free from traditional codes of representation?
Jean Dubuffet first used the term "art brut" during visits to Swiss psychiatric hospitals with Jean Paulhan in 1945. And he wrote in his manifesto for the first collective exhibition of Art Brut at the René Drouin Gallery in 1949: "By this we mean works made by people who are free of artistic culture".
The aesthetic productions carried out in psychiatric hospitals played a triggering role, including of course those of Antonin Artaud. However, some contest the very qualification of "art" for these productions, others see it as a source of "therapy. Name and content therefore raise many questions that are addressed here through rich and useful contributions. The question of selection and valuation processes is interrogated, enlightened by an important and varied iconography.
