This book is inhabited by the encounter of and with Soulages. His encounters forever marked his vision of art: first with archaeology and cave art, then with Conques and Romanesque art, and finally with abstraction during the Second World War. His major encounters in the 1950s and 1960s with Picabia, Hartung, Atlan, Senghor, and then around Conques with Georges Duby and Jacques Le Goff, are also key moments in his work, as is his encounter with Japan.
Michaël de Saint-Cheron and Matthieu Séguéla draw here a golden triangle between the art of Soulages, Black Africa and the land of the rising Sun. This book analyses the black outre noir through an innovative double approach confronted with the history of the 20th century and the dialogue of cultures and the arts.
