The Death of Pharaoh
This "small" historical account in fact relates a "big" affair: that of the harem conspiracy that took place at the end of the reign of Ramses III. To compose a report that she attributes to Preemheb, scribe of the King's Household, Simonne Lacouture has referred to documents from which she quotes numerous extracts. But as a writer who knows the importance of tone in a text of this kind, she has also taken care to conduct her narrative - plot, assassination, trial - with a poetic sense that is not the least bit charming. The Death of Pharaoh is followed by a note by Serge Sauneron, a renowned Egyptologist, who summarises, as a historian, all the known elements of the Ramses III case.
