He was somewhat of a museum misfit, forgotten since 1961, confined to his small foundation in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, created by the faithful Dina Vierny. Maillol the classic is back for a proper review. Initially a painter and decorator, especially of tapestry, close to the Nabis and Rodin, the sculptor was one of the champions of the "return to order". His sculpture draws its sources from ancient culture, reinterpreted with roundness and suavity. In a perpetual quest for perfection.
Beaux Arts Editions looks back at the crucial role that Aristide Maillol played in the birth of modernity at the beginning of the 20th century, and at his entire career, focusing on the fertile and little-known period before the First World War. The album reveals a new vision of his creative process, thanks in particular to the discovery of unpublished drawings and sketchbooks.
