The Musée de l'Orangerie honours a little-known period of the Belgian surrealist painter René Magritte (1898-1967). During the war years, Magritte, who fled to France in 1940, completely changed his style and adopted an impressionist technique. What excited him about the Impressionists, especially Renoir, was the pleasure of painting, the enjoyment of colour, the lightness of the subjects, in short, an aesthetic of happiness.
Beaux Arts Éditions looks at this little-known period of Magritte's life, and places it alongside his work and the masterpieces of Renoir, the paintings of Picabia and other pieces, notably by Jeff Koons.
Exhibtion at the musée de l'Orangerie, from 19 May to 19 July 2021
