Since its creation in the middle of the 16th century, the rulers sought to collect works of art (artificialia) but also scientific apparatus and books (scientifica), rare products of nature (naturalia) and objects that did not come from Europe. Thus, ethnographic objects (ethnografica) that came to Europe via the world trade routes were very successful far beyond the Saxon borders. The Dresden Art Cabinet was one of the first in Europe to open its doors to the general public. Students, artists and researchers as well as craftsmen, shopkeepers and families visited the art cabinet to study, admire and be inspired by the objects on display. Considered as a place of knowledge, this function earned it the name "cabinet of curiosities".
Beaux Arts Editions looks back at the history of this cabinet of curiosities, and presents the most beautiful works exhibited from the 16th to the 18th centuries, thus perfectly reflecting the multiple facets of the world and the procedures of cultural exchange.
