n this painting, the tree is in the foreground, half-hiding the cluster of houses that can be seen behind it. It also almost completely obscures the blue sky. The reclining trunk, probably due to the repeated force of the wind, creates an upward diagonal movement and the movements of the foliage complete the impression of liveliness that emerges from the composition. This landscape was painted in Cagnes in the South of France and is part of a series detailing a group of houses set on a hill hidden by a large tree in the foreground.
