This book offers a reflection on the mechanisms by which Lautrec imposed a strongly characterized identity that still allows him to escape any kind of reductive labelling.
Painter but also lithographer, press cartoonist, illustrator and poster designer, the artist has devoted himself to various modes of expression that echo an insatiable curiosity. The diversification of media and consequently the multiplicity of target audiences are also the expression of a strategy of self-promotion.
At the turn of the 1890s, when his painted production was still little known, his reputation grew, particularly thanks to the illustrated poster, the queen of fleeting images. Lautrec is a master of the genre and his activity as a poster designer alone crystallizes the paradigm of an ephemeral strategy.
Through a fresh look at his works and career choices, supported by a rich iconography, this book aims to follow Toulouse-Lautrec's trajectory and aesthetic and social positioning within the complex artistic landscape of his time.
