"The woman there surrenders - and gets a Madonna's painful beauty"
Lithograph printed in black. Hand colored with red, blue and yellow. The woman in love soon became part of Munch's Love Series, which was developed into the Frieze of Life. "The frieze that is like a poem about life, about love and death," wrote Munch in his notes.
The first Madonna lithograph was drawn on stone with lithographic chalk and ink in Berlin in the autumn of 1895. The image was created in a time of transition. And he further refined and immersed himself in the motif. Also with variants without the symbolic table.
"The break when the whole world stopped," he writes himself about the subject.
