The Pont des Arts, reserved for pedestrians, crosses the Seine between the square courtyard of the Louvre and the Palais des Quatre Nations, now the Institute. Built between 1801 and 1803, it was the first metal bridge launched in France. This bank of the Seine still offers today this rather complete view of the Ile de la Cité in its western part. The masts of the boats moored in the foreground, mark the horizon with the towers of Notre-Dame.
Caroline Armington is of Canadian origin but she practiced her engraving art mainly in Paris from 1900. With her husband Frank, himself a painter and engraver, they trained at the Julian Academy and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. Their artistic career was closely linked and essentially based in France, although they made many trips (Netherlands, Germany, England, Italy, Algeria). The Armingtons took a look at the landscapes, cities and monuments as a tourist attraction. Their interpretation is poetic, simple and harmonious to the taste of travellers of all times. Caroline likes firm lines and precise details.
700 etchings, drypoints, lithographs and paintings were added to the collections of many European and American museums, as their art was very popular.
