This detail is taken from a wallpaper design by A.W.N. Pugin, an architect and designer who was a major influence on the style and theory of the Gothic revival. The heart and lock motif was an allusion to the name of the patron for whom the wallpaper was designed, Lady Macdonald Lockhart of Lee Castle, Lanarkshire.
