Landscape marks a turning point in Soutine's work by opening up perspective and space. The theme is still characterised by the tormented and distorted representation of buildings, where only the presence of the roofs and windows allow the subject to be identified. Here, the buildings are surrounded by a wooded landscape and are overhung by a blue sky. The landscape, far from softening the composition, seems to participate in the distortions of the houses through a powerful expressive movement.
