Antoine Bourdelle (1861-1929) admired Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), twenty years his senior. For fifteen years, Bourdelle was in Rodin's hands, carving marble for the master. Rodin saw in this willingly unruly heir a "scout of the future". Parallel and often superimposed, their paths unfold like so many plastic dialogues that shed light on the creator's hand-to-hand encounter with matter. The confrontation between these two major sculptors reveals the fraternities and reciprocities, as well as the divergences and antagonisms, of two universes that bear the decisive stakes of modern sculpture.
