WRITTEN IN FRENCH
Pioneers of modern art in Vietnam, Lê Phô (1907-2001), Mai-Thu (1906-1980) and Vu Cao Dam (1908-2000) are united by a common career, which began in Hanoi, at the École des beaux-arts de l'Indochine, and continued in France.
While their first works - sculptures, oils on canvas, lacquered panels - are inseparable from the colonial context and reveal the influence of the 1930s, their style changed in 1937, when the three met again in Paris.
This new period was marked by an innovative use of silk as a medium. Their linear figurative style mixes references to Chinese painting and Italian primitives, on recurring themes: young women with Asian features in a garden, children, couples in love, musicians or poets. At the time of maturity, they were tempted by other influences: Vu Cao Dam by Chagall and Lê Phô by Neo-Impressionism.
Thanks to numerous reproductions of works and unpublished family archives, this catalogue is the first reference work devoted to these three artist friends with a singular trajectory.
