Between the summer of 1926 and the beginning of 1930, Pablo Picasso created a cycle of about 150 paintings of great radicality. This new Picassian period was identified as early as 1938 by the publisher and art critic Christian Zervos as the period of "magic paintings". These representations, which mainly depict heads and bodies as if they were in metamorphosis, are characterised by an extreme formalisation and the development of a system of secret signs and formulas capable of influencing the thought of the viewer. The disturbing effect of these works, which still exists today, gives Picasso a new dimension as an artist-magician.
