There are a large number of versions of "The Kiss". The first one dates from 1907, it is known as sculpture of Craiova.
It will be retaken in 1909 and will serve as a funerary monument, at the burial of a friend of Brancusi, who committed suicide because of her love for him.
It can be seen in Montparnasse cemetery (division 22, section 22).
Brancusi will retake the theme of the kiss in different forms. 92/5000
Essayez avec cette orthographe : Tantôt les deux personnages serons agenouillés, tantôt ils seront debout, les pieds enlacés.
Sometimes the two figures will be kneeling, sometimes they will stand, their feet entwined.
At other times, these sculptures will support a large stone slab forming "La Porte du Baiser".
As they evolved, these sculptures became more and more abstract, to form a single block, the symbolism is obvious, it is the union of lovers within a single material, they turn into a single stone, almost a cube... Alchemy of Love, dare I speak of a philosopher's stone. The two bodies appear united, welded, a single line separates them. You can barely see the eyes, the mouth is reduced to a single stroke.
