This wood engraving is one of the most recognized works of Japanese art in the world. It represents a huge wave threatening boats near the Japanese prefecture of Kanagawa. Although sometimes considered a tsunami, the wave is, as the title of the image indicates, more likely to be a large okinami (literally "High Seas Wave"). As in all the prints in the series, it represents the region around Mount Fuji under special conditions and the mountain itself appears in the background.
