Women painters, 1780 - 1830 The birth of a battle

March 3, 2021 July 4, 2021 Exhibition has ended
It is widely believed that after the glory of Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun linked to the Ancien Régime, it was not until the second half of the 19th century that such remarkable female painters could be found. However, it was between 1780 and 1830 that their struggle found its roots: the right to training, professionalization, a public existence and a place on the art market. The women artists presented at the Musée du Luxembourg on the occasion of this exhibition were as much actors of these social changes as they were of the changes in 19th century art.

In 1765, for the first time, the Nouvelles de la République des Lettres et des Arts, in the Revue du Salon de la correspondance pour les sciences et les arts, published a section entitled "women painters".

This catalogue brings together works and documents that make it possible to understand how - i.e. under what conditions and according to what strategies - painters, because they are women, have had to learn the trade, enter the art scene, build their careers and forge their public figure.
