The rich production of the Limousin enamel workshops in the 12th and 13th centuries, well known for its sacred objects, is also remarkable for its pieces with secular decoration. Candlesticks, twin cups, and boxes decorated with medallions compete in quality with liturgical objects.
The collection of enamels assembled by Cardinal Guala Bicchieri is an example of this. A high political figure and a great diplomat, the cardinal was an eminent figure in 13th century Europe. A wealthy and wise collector, he assembled an important collection of enamels from Limousin, most of which are now kept in the Palazzo Madama in Turin.
Exhibition Les émaux de Limoges à décor profane. Autour des collections du cardinal Guala Bicchier, Musée de Cluny, Musée national du Moyen Âge from 13 April to 29 August 2016.
