Toulouse-Lautrec Resolutely modern - Connaissance des arts Special edition

FRENCH LANGUAGE

Known for his works representing the hectic Parisian nightlife in the last years of the 19th century, Toulouse-Lautrec was much more than the painter from Montmartre. This special edition, in connection with the exhibition presented at the Grand Palais, gives back its place to this painter whose aesthetic ambition was only equalled by his poetic dimension.

The artist

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901)

Born on November 24, 1864 in Albi, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec began painting in his youth and innovated in lithographic drawing. He became very famous for his posters, influenced by Japanese and impressionist styles and for having impregnated with humanity the marginalized populations in his art, including sex workers, as seen in his printed series Elles de 1896. He died on September 9, 1901, at the age of 36, as a result of heavy alcohol consumption and various diseases.
