Chinese horse brooch
This picturesque and highly natural horse is made of ochre-coloured clay, lightly fired and therefore crumbly. The treatment of the head is very realistic and portrays the horse neighing, with an open mouth revealing its teeth, widened lips and flared nostrils. Stylised arched eyebrows enhance its elegant eyes.
The strongly accentuated curves and counter-curves of the body form a continuous outline, starting from the top of the head down to the base of the neck, then extending towards the croup and swinging up to the breast.
During the Later Han Period, representations of horses usually indicated membership of the ruling class.
