I have seen letters from Napoleon to Madame Bonaparte, during the first Italian campaign. She had followed him there; but sometimes he left her on the rear of the army, until the safety of the road had been assured by victory.
These letters are very peculiar: the handwriting is almost indecipherable, the spelling is faulty, the style is bizarre and confused. But the tone is so passionate, the feelings so strong, the expressions so animated and at the same time so poetic, the love so different from all other loves, that there is no woman who would not value receiving such letters.
