Gift of Robert Strozzi to the King of France, then gift of Henry II to Anne de Montmorency at the Château d'Ecouen until 1632, then Collection of Cardinal de Richelieu, Paris until 1793, entered the Louvre in 1794, destined for the tomb of Pope Julius II (1441-1513) but finally unused, the two slave figures elaborated by Michelangelo gave rise to various interpretations since the Renaissance. It is certain that they do not represent slaves but rather prisoners. They may personify the provinces submitted by Pope Julius II during his various campaigns. They can also symbolize the arts, which at the death of the pontiff, lost their patron and could no longer flourish. The dying slave seems resigned to his fate. Calm and relaxed, he seems to die as one slips into sleep, hence his name sometimes "sleeper".
