Seated Scribe, 4th or 5th Dynasty, 2600-2350. Paris, Louvre Museum. Original in polychrome limestone
This scribe owes its celebrity to its realism, accentuated by the good preservation of its polychromy and the mystery surrounding its discovery. But it is especially his eyes that fascinates: encrusted with rock crystal, his eyes have an astonishing power of life. The particular care given to this sculpture suggests that it is a very high dignitary of the Old Kingdom.
