Foliage brooch inspired by a belt buckle created by the Yugoslav-born artist Bojdiar Karageorgevitch (Belgrade 1861 - Versailles 1908). The style of this piece of jewellery places in wholeheartedly in the artistic current of its time : "Art nouveau", or "Modern Style".
Contrasting with the historical hieratism of the second half of the 19th century, Art Nouveau, as its name indicates encouraged spontaneous creativity freed from the rules of antiquated classicism. Art Nouveau is generally defined as the expression of a desire to define structures by removing all superfluous decoration, accompanied by a need for irrational ornamentation calling above all on feeling : Bojidar Kerageorgevitch"s design is perfect illustration. Extremely simplified shapes, a dynamic yet calm composition due to the predominance of curves, intense chromatic combinations : the end result is certain.
The original piece from which this brooch has adapted was acquired in 1906 for the Musée du Luxembourg. It finally entered its collections in 1912. Ownership was transferred from the musée National d'Art Moderne to the musée d'Orsay in 1978.
